SCI & SCI-2 This forum is for answering questions about the Sense of Community Index (SCI) and the newly developed Sense of Community Index version 2 (SCI-2) based on the theoretical work of McMillan & Chavis (1986). Both instruments are available in the SenseofCommunity.com Library.

Question Spanish Translation?

I would like to use the sense of community survey just as it was
designed for a research project I am conducting through Denver
University's School of Social Work. The only change that I need to make
is to translate it into Spanish. Has anyone ever translated the SCI-2 into Spanish before?

Hi!

The SCI spanish version is listed in the Library. We have a spanish version of the SCI-2 which we will post within the week. I recommend the use the use of the SCI-2 over the SCI because it has shown better reliability and is conceptually more complete. I will post a presentation which reports the use of this instrument in Spanish and English.

Default German Translation

I would like to use the SCI-2 for a study, but do need a German version.
Does anyone know about a translation? otherwise I would like to translate it. Is the procedure and validation-study of the spanish translation published anywhere so I could take the same path?
thanks for your replies...

The Spanish language (Latin American) of the SCI-2 is now posted in the Library. BTW, this instrument was first used in a study of ten communities in Colorado.

I do not know of a German translation. In terms on guidance on how to best translate. I have posted an article on Cross Cultural Adaptation of Measures in the SOC Library under General SOC articles. Another reference is
Harkness, JA, Van de Vijver, FJR; Mohler, PP (2003) Cross Cultural Survey Methods. Hoboken, NJ: Wiley.

The key is to translate the concepts, not the words and to verify with more than one person.

If you do end up translating, please post to the Library so others can use it.
