| SCI & SCI-2 This forum is for answering questions about the Sense of Community Index (SCI) and the newly developed Sense of Community Index version 2 (SCI-2) based on the theoretical work of McMillan & Chavis (1986). Both instruments are available in the SenseofCommunity.com Library. |

Hi I am doing a cross-cultural study on sense of community in relation to elderly people. I have the following questions regarding this: Is there a Norwegian and Hindi version of SCI and SCI-2? What level should community be defined in terms of when measuring SOC in cities of big difference in terms of residents (Mumbai has 13 million residents and Trondheim 170 000) ? I want to test if the SCI-2 provides a better fit for the population of Mumbai than the SCI (as it should be better adapted to non-western cultures). I also want to establish a baseline/check the status of the SOC among elderly people in Mumbai and Trondheim. I am interested in their feeling of belonging to the society, but have problems with choosing what level to define community. Could this be measured on city-level? Any suggestions? |

Come on! Any suggestions? I was thinking about defining community at the city level, but then there appears some problems in the formulation of some of the questions: Question no. 4 in the SCI "I can recognize most of the people who live (in my city)" will be meaningless in Mumbai- could this be defined in terms of the neighborhood, while leaving the rest of the questions to be defined at city level? In terms of the SCI-2 the same problem arises in relation to question no. 8 and 9: "I can recognize most of the members of (this city)", and "Most city members know me". Could the same be done here? Or will this mess up the results? |
